Who Invented the Shipping Container?

Bags, boxes and containers have been used to store and transport goods for tens of thousands of years. For instance, the Blombos Cave in South Africa has some of the earliest cave paintings on record. These paintings were done with red ochre that was stored and brought to the site in sea shells by early Homo-Sapians, all dating back to around 73,000 BC.
What we see and know as shipping containers today aren’t anywhere near that old. Early developments of containerisation came from the 18th-19th Century British, who began using wooden boxes to transfer coal from canal barges to carts. During the Second World War, the US military began development on a standardised container that could transport weaponry safely and more efficiently. But it was not until 1956 that an American called Malcolm McLean and an engineer called Keith Tantlinger created the standard shipping container.
After making his money in a family trucking company, McLean purchased a steamship company and wanted a better way to transport goods from truck to ship. They came up with the idea of the modern container with Tantlinger designing the twist-lock mechanism that lets them be stacked and secured during transit.
The Role of Containerisation in Intermodal Transport
Containerisation is the practice of transporting goods in large containers that are universally sized, and can be easily transferred between different modes of transport like ships, trains and lorries, without unloading the cargo itself. This standardisation is what underpins intermodal transport, allowing a single container to move seamlessly from origin to destination across multiple transport systems.
As far as intermodal logistics is concerned, the container acts as a standardised transport unit. Goods are packed once at the source, sealed and then carried across road, rail and sea networks without repacking. This all significantly reduces handling time, labour costs and the risk of damage or theft.

Today, around 90% of non-bulk cargo worldwide is transported using containers, highlighting their central role in modern supply chains. When Was the First Shipping Container Used?
After these modern-styled shipping containers were made, it was the 26th of April 1956 that saw a freighter, called the Ideal X, complete the first transportation run with the new McLean containers. It transported 58 containers from Newark to Houston and was seen as a rousing success. Shortly after this, ships designed purely to carry containers went into production and were known as a Maxton and could carry 60 containers at a time.
The continued success of this new logistics solution relied on an international precedent of how all new containers would be built, how new ships would accommodate them and how they would be adapted into any logistics centre. ISO is the International Organisation for Standardisation and set the foundation for this by specifying that containers must be 8ft wide, 10/20/30/40ft long and 8ft 6” tall.
