When talking about shipping container weight, it’s important to know the three main measurements that make up the overall weight of a container.
- Tare Weight: This refers to the weight of the empty container itself, and permanent fixtures such as the marine plywood floor
- Payload Weight: Sometimes called ‘net weight’, this is the maximum allowable weight of the cargo, equipment or materials inside the unit
- Gross Weight: This is the maximum combined weight of both the container (tare) and its contents (payload/net)
In simple terms, the tare weight and payload weight added together must never exceed the maximum gross weight rating of the container. All this information will be marked on the door end of standard containers, along with other identification details. Let’s now look at how these weights approximately break down across three of the most common container lengths.
10ft Containers

20ft Containers
These 20ft containers are the most popular shipping units in the world, offering an excellent balance of storage capacity, portability and value for money.

- Payload Weight: Approx 28,310kg (62,420lbs)
- Gross Weight: Approx 30,480kg (67,200lbs)
- Volume: Approx 33 cubic metres (1,165 cubic feet)

40ft Containers
When maximum capacity is the priority, 40ft containers provide a vast amount of space while maintaining the same strength and security as smaller units.
- Tare Weight: Approx 3,750kg (8,270lbs)
- Payload Weight: Approx 26,730kg (58,930lbs)
- Gross Weight: Approx 30,480kg (67,200lbs)
- Volume: Approx 67 cubic metres (2,375 cubic feet)
Offering more than double the internal volume of a 20ft container, 40ft units are ideal for large-scale storage, container conversions and applications where space is at a premium.
One of the quirks of shipping container weight is that the gross weight of a 40ft container is actually the same as that of a 20ft container. This reflects the handling and transport limits that shipping containers are designed around (as defined in ISO 668), helping ensure they can be moved safely between ships, lorries and trains around the world. Because a 40ft container requires more steel in its construction, this actually means the payload weight capacity of a 40ft container is slightly lower than that of a 20ft container!
Container Structure Information
The tare weight of each container is made up of its construction materials. These give each unit its inherent strength, structure and security. Containers are made from Corten steel and need to withstand a harsh life at sea, which is why they’re constructed to be water and windproof.
The corner castings play a critical role in lifting and handling, allowing containers to be safely moved between ships, trains, lorries and site locations. The weight of each container is borne by the corner posts, floor structure and outer structural beams, which are all welded together to create a solid cube that can hold significant weight. The overall shipping container weight is also influenced by permanent fixtures such as the doors and marine plywood flooring.
Why is Container Weighing Required?
Knowing the weight of a shipping container is important for a few reasons. Firstly, it helps ensure the safe transport of each unit, whether that’s by road, rail or sea. Weight also determines the type of lifting equipment required, from dockside cranes to mobile HIABs (lorries fitted with hydraulic cranes).
Knowing how much a shipping container weighs also influences where a container can be placed, as the ground beneath it must be capable of supporting both the container’s weight and the weight of its contents without sinking or becoming unstable.

We just mentioned HIAB vehicles, also known as truck-mounted cranes, and most containers are delivered using these. By combining a lorry and a hydraulic crane in a single unit, containers can be transported and placed in position much more easily. They can also be relied on to move your unit between different sites if your installation is temporary, such as a site office or equipment storage unit.
The exact delivery method will depend on the size and weight of the container, as well as the accessibility and ground conditions of your site. Smaller containers can often be positioned in tighter spaces, while larger units require more room for both the delivery vehicle and crane to operate safely.
