Shipping containers are the global standard for transporting goods worldwide. They’re durable, standardised and weatherproof, and are designed to be stacked and transported in large numbers. But how high can shipping containers be stacked and still be safe? The exact number depends on the condition, load weight and location of the containers.
In this complete guide, the team at KH Containers breaks down how high you can stack shipping containers under various circumstances. Keep reading for more information or to speak to an expert, just call us now on 0333 577 3191.
What Determines How High Shipping Containers Can Be Stacked?
How high shipping containers can be stacked will depend on a number of different factors, including:
- Condition – newer containers in better condition with fewer dents and no corrosion will be able to support more weight than older, more worn containers
- Length of storage – if you’re planning to have your containers stacked in place for long periods of time, you may not be able to stack them as high as you could if you were stacking them for a shorter period
- Location – the location and surface where you stack your containers will have an impact too, as containers stacked on a solid surface will be able to be stacked higher, for example, or if you’re stacking containers for shipping by boat, you may be more limited in the height you can reach for safety reasons
- Load weight – finally, you’ll also be restricted by the load weight of your containers, as heavier loads will mean you can’t stack them as high
How High are Containers Stacked at Sea?
One of the primary uses of shipping containers is to store and protect goods during transit by sea. So, how high can shipping containers be stacked at sea?
The ISO 1496-1 safety standard requires shipping containers to be able to support a superimposed weight of 213,360kg. In real terms, this means containers can be stacked roughly nine high. However, there are no legal limits on stacking height for containers. The exact number that can be stacked together at sea will depend on the lashing system of the vessel in question, as well as the load of the containers.
Stacking limits at sea are different from stacking containers on private land. There are far more safety concerns at sea, as containers are likely to move in transit. Although containers stacked on ships are secured using locking pins and restraints.
How High Can Shipping Containers Be Stacked on Land?
On land, shipping containers are generally only stacked three or four high. When containers are stacked for transport at sea, they’re secured in place. Whereas on land, this usually isn’t the case, so stacking heights are more limited. Land-based stacks are typically kept smaller to avoid toppling during high winds.
Before stacking containers on land, it’s important to make sure you have a suitable foundation prepared. This needs to be solid, level and with effective drainage to prevent water pooling around the base of the containers.
As with stacking containers at sea, the height you can reach will depend in part on the load weight of the containers. Units with greater loads won’t be able to be stacked as high as those that’re emptier and lighter.
Safety Considerations When Stacking Containers
There are several safety considerations you should make when stacking shipping containers:
- Safe lifting and equipment procedures – always use suitable equipment and trained operators when lifting and stacking containers
- Ground stability – ensure the ground where you’re planning to install your containers is solid, level and able to hold the necessary weight
- Load distribution – stack the containers so that the weight is evenly distributed through the corner posts
- Securing the containers – for high stacks, or if stacking for sea transport, use locking pins and twist locks to secure the containers in place
Need Advice on Stacking Containers Safely?
With the heavy loads involved and the potential risk of injury or property damage, safely stacking shipping containers is a key concern. How high you can stack them will depend on condition, location, load and whether you have securing mechanisms in place.
